The Signaller
Fundamentally, a Signaller ensures a train gets from A to B safely and ontime or as near to time as possible.
We change signals and the lay of the track to ensure trains take the correct route.
Our job is far from as simple a that!
We have thousands of pages of rules and regulations in place which we are expected to keep up to date with. Any one of these rules could be needed at the drop of a hat.
We are continually assessed to ensure competency and plans put in place should we fall foul of the standard.
This is the railway and things don't always go to plan, therefore faults and failure can and do happen. This is where a signallers job becomes challenging.
During the day to day running of a Signalling location, technology ensures safety as well as the back up of human interaction but, when the technology fails, we come to the rescue! Rules and procedures lead the way. This may mean the signaller authorising a train past a red signal or asking a driver to examine the line ahead... whichever method is in place, the signaller has the lead responsibility.
